Northern Scientific Training Program

Value: Maximum $5,000
Number offered: Varies
Eligibility: The Federal Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development provides grants to assist in defraying high costs of research done in the Canadian North. These grants may be used only to cover transportation costs, student's living expenses up to a per diem of $30 for the time spent in the field, as well as costs related to the hiring of translators and interpreters while in the field.

Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada and at the graduate or third or fourth year undergraduate level. Students may hold university or other scholarships concurrently with the NSTP grant. Research must be conducted in the Canadian North, which is defined as that part of Canada which lies north of the southern limit of the discontinuous permafrost zone; in Saskatchewan, this means a line approximately from Flin Flon through La Ronge and Buffalo Narrows.

Grants will not normally exceed $5,000. Successful applicants may be funded for successive years, but each year's support must be requested separately.
