ESL Bursary for International Students (CGPS)

The ESL Bursary for International Students is a support program for international students who are registered in a full-time graduate program at the University of Saskatchewan and who would like to strengthen their English language skills by taking a course offered through The Language Centre.

Note: ESL bursaries are not intended to be used by students who have been admitted conditionally and must satisfy a language requirement, or who have taken any of the English for Academic Purposes courses (EAP 40/EAP 50/EAP 60). As well, these bursaries will not be awarded to students who were exempted from the language requirements upon admission to the university.

ESL bursaries are available for the following courses:

  • Developing advanced writing skills for academic success (essay and general writing)
  • Developing writing skills for Graduate Students (research paper emphasis)
  • Developing advanced academic speaking skills

Eligibility requirements

The applicant must:

  • be an international student
  • be a fully eligibility graduate student in good standing registered in a degree program when they take up the bursary
  • have met the minimum English proficiency requirements
  • not have had their Proof of English Language proficiency waived when applying for their graduate degree program
  • be recommended by your graduate supervisor or Graduate Chair that for an ESL class

There are a limited number of bursaries available for students. If there are more qualified students than the number of bursaries available, priority will be given to Ph. D. students and to those students who have not received a bursary in a previous term.

To apply for this bursary, complete the applicable online application form.

The applicant’s supervisor or Graduate Chair must complete the Recommendation by Applicant’s Supervisor or Graduate Chair online form. Once this is submitted, it will be matched to your ESL application.

Incomplete applications will not be considered for the competition.

Students who receive an ESL Bursary will be expected to:

  • Pay a non-refundable administration fee of $31.00 to The Language Centre.
  • Maintain full-time registration in your graduate program at the University of Saskatchewan throughout the duration of the ESL class.
  • Attend the ESL class regularly and complete all assignments.

The ESL Bursary will only be available to you during the term that you applied and cannot be carried forward into another term. You will need to re-apply for another bursary by one of the application deadlines.

Deadline:

The call for applications for this bursary will go out at the beginning of the Fall, Winter, and Spring/Summer terms.

Competition deadlines are as follows:

  • Spring/Summer competition - April 1 annually
  • Fall competition - August 1 annually
  • Winter competition - December annually

All compeititons close at 4:30pm CST. If the deadline date falls on a weekend, the deadline will be moved to the following week day.
