Traditional Fulbright Scholar Awards

Value: $25,000 US for a full academic year (nine months) or $12,500 for one semester. Basic health insurance is also provided.

Eligibility: Traditional Fulbright Scholar awards for Canadian scholars are open to scholars in all fields (excluding medical training) and are designed to enable emerging and established scholars, post-doctoral researchers and experienced professionals to conduct research, teach, or undertake a combination of both activities for one semester or a full academic year at a university or research centre of their choice in the United States. Applicants must have received a Ph.D. or equivalent professional/terminal degree by December 31, 2014 or have equivalent professional experience.

Fulbright scholarships are awarded for periods ranging from one semester to a full academic year. Ideally, the dates of the award should coincide with the academic year of the host institution. Traditional Fulbright Scholar awards are not available for the summer months only, nor are awards available for attendance at professional conferences or meetings.

All Canadian applicants to the traditional scholars program must meet all of the eligibility requirements enumerated in eligibility section of this site. More specifically, eligible candidates must be Canadian citizens (landed immigrant or permanent resident status is not acceptable) at the time of the application, who have not had significant recent experience in the United States. Further, they cannot be dual citizens of both Canada and the United States, they cannot presently reside in the United States.

Please note that Fulbright awards may be held at the same time as other form of compensation (i.e. sabbatical pay, salary, or research grant).
