Submissions:

Gateway is committed to the multidisciplinary study of history and encourages submissions relating to historical subjects or the theory and study of history from all disciplines. Interested authors are requested to submit their articles, book reviews, and thesis abstracts to Gateway at gateway.journal@sask.usask.ca
Authors are strongly encouraged to conform to the guidelines which follow:

Articles
Article submissions should not exceed 30 pages and shorter submissions are welcome. Submissions must relate to some area of historical inquiry. Authors must use footnote or in-text citations and these must conform to a recognised style such as may be found in the Chicago Manual of Style.

All submissions must be accompanied by a short abstract of the article.

All article submissions will be evaluated by external referees with expertise in the area of study. Gateway editorial staff will make the final decision on accepting or rejecting pieces for publication based on the evaluations of the external reviewers.

Book Reviews
Book review submissions should not exceed 2500 words. We accept reviews on any scholarly books dealing with an area of historical inquiry and published after 1999. Please structure your review so that it contains the following elements:

· a brief summary of the book
· an assessment of the argument and evidence used by the author
· an assessment of the place of the book within current scholarship
· an assessment of any factual errors
· a concluding assessment

Thesis Abstracts
Gateway accepts thesis abstracts for publication. Abstracts should be one to two pages in length and need not contain citations. Abstracts may be for completed or in-progress theses at the MA or Ph.D. level.  All submissions should include an e-mail address by which the author may be contacted directly concerning her or his research. In addition, submissions should contain the title of the thesis, the author's full name, department, university, and degree programme.

Formatting of All Types of Submissions
All submissions must be in Microsoft Word or HTML form. Submissions in other file formats may not be accepted. Documents should be submitted according to the following additional formatting guidelines:

Font: Documents should use 11pt or 12pt Times New Roman, or similar serif font. The default font should be left unchanged except in the case of foreign words, and book, periodical, and report titles which should be italicized, according to the Chicago Manual of Style.

Page Setup: Documents should use 1” or 1.25” page margins and portrait-oriented pages except where tables or figures require landscape pages.

Titles, Section Headings and Subtitles: Bolding and underlining of titles, section headings, and the like is NOT necessary and should be avoided. Instead, titles, section breaks, subtitles, and section headings may be marked by extra hard returns before and after the titles, subtitles, or section heads, and extra hard returns between sections.

Block Quotations: Block quotations should be marked by left and right indented margins of 1” from the regular page margin (or 2”--2.25” from the edges of the page), and an additional hard return before and after.

Paragraph Spacing: Authors are requested NOT to use any special paragraph spacing in their documents. Paragraphs may be indicated by indenting the first line of each paragraph using the TAB key, and/or adding a hard return between paragraphs.

Failing to comply with any of these formatting specifications will slow the consideration of your submission, and may lead to the incorrect formatting of the final product, should your submission be accepted. For this reason, authors are strongly urged to read and follow the above carefully.

Authors whose submissions are accepted for publication will have the opportunity to proof pre-publication drafts of their pieces and inform the staff of mistakes in formatting or transcription. Editorial or substantive content changes, however, will not be possible.

Please Note:

All article submissions are subject to the discretion of the Gateway editorial board and will go through a process of authentication by an expert in the field (book reviews and thesis abstracts will be viewed only by the editorial board). All material submitted to Gateway will be protected under copyright law and remain the sole property of the author. Please include your name, e-mail address, department, and academic program.

In addition, Gateway would like to hear from any persons who may be interested in acting as referees or joining the editorial committee for this journal. If you are interested, please forward your name, department, area of specialization, and your e-mail to the address below.
